In Deuteronomy the Israelites are told to remember how God was continually with them in the wilderness; remember how he supplied manana every day so that they knew that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. Once they enter the Promised Land they are not to forget how God supplied daily. In the New Testament we are told to eat of the bread and drink of the cup in rememberance of Christ. We are to remember what He has done. It is important to remember what God has done in our lives, to be continually thankful and reflect upon how He has been faithful. However, we must not live those moments in the present, continually saying God did this or that, but we must continually live seeking intimacy with Christ, not settling for past revelations or understandings, past achievements or failures, or previous growth in Christ. In Jude 21 we are told to keep ourselves in the love of God. In Corinthians it mentions examining ourselves to see if we are in the faith. In Philippians we are told to continue to work out our salvation with fear and trembling (or awe and reverance). It is good to look back but we must always be moving forward, being brutally honest with Christ, ourselves, others about our faith journey. We must be never satisfied with what he did in the past, but we must be thirsty for the conintual presence of Christ in our lives in the present. In John 11, Martha, Mary, and the disciples all know that Jesus could have healed Lazarus when he was sick. They had no idea of the fullness of His power and glory until they saw Lazarus raised from the dead. God is much bigger than we think and His goodness is far more than our thoughts can imagine. By saying God can only do this or that we limit His power and glory because we hold ideas in our heads that do match His true character. By saying God can only heal this way, or that he does not care for my struggles, or that He can only work according to what we have known in the past, we put God into a box and dont allow him to be God, and we cheapen His greatness. These are some of the things that I am learning, that are being revealed to me about my own walk, and beginning to be awakened to. It is so easy to say God did this or that and say that was enough. It is much harder to daily walk in the grace of God day by day and to continually trust in His faithfulness. Living in the past causes us to have little trust in the present. “Trust escalates not because God has offered proof, but because He has shown His face.” Oftentimes I can cry out to God because I want some kind of relief instead of Himself and think I have sought God but I have only sought self. “Based on the solid, irrefutable evidence of Gods relentless faithfulness, a certainity in the trustworthiness of the tremendous Lover evolves without the least sweat and strain on our part.” Learning to trust in God with all of myself, my weakness, my ugly nature, fears, my strengths, and my gifts is lived in the present moment daily believing that “He is able to keep me from stumbling and to present me blameless before the presence of His glory…” (Jude 24).
